My Morning Workout: Tabata

My Morning Workout: Tabata

If you've been following me for a while, you're familiar with my deep love for exercise. I've toyed with several different workouts, loving separate benefits of each one. My current jam has been doing 20-40 minutes of some form of interval training, usually Tabata or general HIIT (high-intensity interval training), followed by 30 minutes of yoga, or a brisk walk.

How I Move

I went ahead and made a brief 8-minute demo of my morning Tabata workout, and I plan on doing more with different forms of exercise. Tabata is essentially a high-intensity form of aerobic exercise that works in the format of 20 seconds of exercise, 10 seconds of rest, repeat 8 times for a total of 4 minutes (a round). In the video, I take you through two sample rounds of movements that work for me, and I usually do around 6-8 rounds. To learn more about Tabata, read here!

The idea for Tabata training originated from the world of athletes, as many of our workout ideas do. Dr. Izumi Tabata, a professor at the Faculty of Sport and Health Science at Ritsumeikan University in Japan, along with the head coach of the Japanese speed skating team, wanted to find out if very short bursts of high intensity exercise, followed by even shorter rests, would improve the skaters' performance.

What I Listen to

When it comes to what I listen to, lately I've been obsessed with Christy Harrison's podcast Food Psych about eating disorders, disordered eating, and intuitive eating. She talks to professionals in so many different fields (journalists, dietitians, therapists, health coaches, bloggers, etc), and has helped me so much! I consider myself recovered from my past disordered eating tendencies and urges, but it's so refreshing to reiterate all that I learned while in therapy, and also stay up-to-date on what women are still struggling with.

Being vegan is a complete lifestyle shift for Collin and I, not a restrictive, self-depricating fad. In the Mindful Guide, I encourage you to explore your motivation for becoming vegan and dismiss the concept of good vs bad foods. If this is something you think about a lot, consider getting the eBook and listening to Food Psych! If you're anything like me, you'll be hooked.

What I Wear

For workouts, I definitely have to wear something as tight as possible. I get so distracted if I'm jiggling and bouncing around, and I feel like it really interferes with my performance! I'll never be the girl in the super-short shorts, sweatpants, or even those flowy yogi pants everyone on social media likes to wear. Yes, it looks super amazing when you do an impressive inversion, but it distracts me so bad when I have fabric falling all over my face or randomly sticking to fresh sweat.

I also like wearing something that breathes. I tend to breakout really easily if I sweat a ton (and I love sweating as much as possible) and don't shower as soon as I'm done exercising. Recently, I stumbled across Prana, a brand specializing in fair trade and organic clothing!

Our commitment to sustainability, community, and doing right still inspires and pushes us to find innovative ways to do good things in a good way. (Prana)

I was obsessed to find their workout line, loving how the leggings were made of hemp, the top made of recycled materials! Breathable, amazing patterns and designs, the fit is snug and comfortable, and there's bra pads! Eep! To snag these two items (I wear a size small), click here and here

The Video

Sorry if this video is awkward! I definitely want to do something a little more legit in the future, this was mainly just to share something small and quick! So many of you have been asking for so long. The angle is awkward. There's no music, and that's awkward. But I'm so grateful that you wanted to know a little more about my lifestyle! Always feel free to ask me questions!

**Disclaimer: I am not a fitness professional or a medical practitioner. Please, always consult your doctor before beginning any form of exercise. This video is simply something that works for me!
